Ontario’s native elk populations were extirpated from the province in the late 1800s because of overharvesting and habitat change associated with human settlement. As a result of restoration efforts taken by the Ministry of Natural Resources, partners and volunteers in the late 1990s, approximately 600 elk now inhabit several areas across Ontario. While some populations have shown declines since this reintroduction, others have shown steady growth.
